The sharpness value determines how the intensity of the tool increases from the edge to the centre. A value of 0 here means that the tool only achieves maximum intensity in the centre. The higher the value, the more steep the rise in intensity. At a value of 255 the intensity at the edge jumps immediately to the maximum value.
