An effect similar to that of a text marker can be produced if you disable changes for one or more colour planes. Thus these colour planes remain unchanged irrespective of the intensity of the tool, and let the previous underlying contents shine through.
You'll find some examples of multi colour markers in the provided settings file. This colour plane method does have the limitation that not all marker colours are achievable.
