Calamus under (!MM) won't start: Insuffient memory.
I have today downloaded the current demo version of Calamus
from the net. Unfortunately the program won't let itself be launched,
and reports that not enough memory is installed. That can't be right
as I am using the program under (!MM) with 320 MB of RAM. Is there
something that one has to pay regard to with (!MM) in this
respect?
Calamus is relatively sensible about critical memory settings.
However the problem can usually be solved very quickly:
- Check how much memory (!MM) is really getting from the Mac OS.
The best way is to start (!MM) and then in the (!MM) menu click
somewhere at the right beyond he actual menu entries to open the
Applications popup. This shows on the last line how many kB of RAM has
been allocated to (!MM). Possibly there is simply too little shown
there.
- Then use [Apple]+[W] to switch to the Mac OS side and in the
(!MM) menu (Mac mode!) look under
Memory allocation
to see what
values have been entered here. There are 4 memory values with which
the (!MM)'s memory sharing is defined, and an important switch
Lower I/O region usable for programs
. Please switch this on.
- After this set the following values to give (!MM) roughly half
of the physically available RAM, for example:
Minimum ST: 80000 KB = 80 MB
Maximum ST: 160000 KB = 160 MB
Maximum total: 160000 KB = 160 MB
Minimum Mac OS: 8192 KB = 8 MB
|
- In addition switch on
Allocate time to Mac applications
,
so that MacPrint can really output via the Mac OS Quickdraw to Mac
printers.
- When (!MM) has been configured in this way, it has to be
terminated and restarted. (If it doesn't want to start, then it may
not
stomach
these memory values for some reason. In that case
keep the [Alternate] key pressed during the next start of (!MM) so
that the memory setting dialog appears again, and change the values
slightly in that.)
- When (!MM) is started one more, check in the menu again that
really around 70-150 MB of memory is available in MagiMac now. (Some
will be swallowed by (!MM) itself plus jinnee etc. ...)
- Now start Calamus. If Calamus still objects, this is probably
due to too much or too little memory being left free for (!MM) in the
CALAMUS.SET file. In that case rename the CALAMUS.SET file (say to
CALAMUS.SE_), so that it will not be loaded the next time that Calamus
is started. Then load the required modules manually and call up the
System Parameters module (SYSTEM.CXM). In that, at far right of the
dialog, set the memory values for ST- and TT-RAM to 2 MB each (the
Vector Output Buffer may be some 128 KB) and after closing the dialog
resave the Calamus.SET file (Options menu, Save System Settings). Quit
Calamus and then restart it. Everything ought to be OK now.
- Optionally of course you can also mess around in the
CALAMUS.SET file with an ASCII editor and alter the lines
RAMforTOS
and FastRAMforTOS
(Careful: Hexadecimal values
with leading $ character!).
