Why do CFN fonts load slower that TTF fonts?

Why does it take nearly twice as long for CFN fonts to load in Calamus for Windows95 as when loading TTF fonts?

The native Windows versions of Calamus (NT 1.0, 1.5, Win95 1.95, 1.95b) convert CFN fonts internally during loading into TrueType fonts. Hence it takes longer for CFN fonts to load. TrueType fonts are usually of lower quality than CFN fonts; output takes place dirctly via the Windows OS routines and no longer directly from Calamus as happens with Calamus SL.
